Hooge

Hooge is the second-largest and most-visited Hallig. 5.7 km² of marsh, 10 warfts, no village in the usual sense — yet over 60,000 day visitors come each summer, sailing from Schlüttsiel by horse-cart and Adler steamer for a day in another world. Stay a night and the silence sets in after the last boat leaves. On Hooge: the famous "Königspesel" (Renaissance parlour with Dutch tiles, because a 1735 shipwreck led the farmer to host King Frederik IV of Denmark), the Hallig church, the storm-surge cinema. Get there: Adler ferries from Schlüttsiel.
