Langeneß

Langeneß is the largest Hallig in the Wadden Sea — 9 km long, narrow, kept from the North Sea only by warfts, those artificial dwelling mounds. Eighteen warfts rise from the marsh, each carrying one or two farms. On "Land unter" days — about 20 per year — everything is underwater except the mounds. Stay a night and you'll see it. No cars: the "Lorenbahn" rail (the only link between warfts at high tide), horse-cart, bike. Worth seeing: the Königspesel on neighbouring Hallig Hooge, the Hallig museum, and the old captains' parlours. Get there: ferry from Schlüttsiel or Hooge. No visitor tax.
