Westerland (Sylt)

Westerland is the heart of Sylt: a town with a beach promenade, salt in the air, and the fastest island rhythm of the German North Sea. Twelve kilometres of sandy beach run from Brandenburger Strand down to the Rantumbecken. Early risers walk with the wind, watch surfers in the break, and return for coffee at a Frisian bakery. The town itself offers a theatre, spa clinics and a casino, but to understand Sylt you head out: Kampen with the red cliff to the north, Hörnum with seal banks to the south, Keitum with its whitewashed Frisian houses to the east. Mudflat tours leave from List, kite surfers gather at the Rantumbecken, and gourmets book tables at Sansibar or Buhne 16. Even in a storm — especially then — Westerland is striking: walkers in heavy jackets, an empty beach, the sound of the North Sea against the promenade railing.
