Wangerooge

Niedersachsen· insel· 1,200 Inhabitants

Wangerooge is the easternmost of the inhabited East Frisian Islands — and the only one that belongs to Lower Saxony but to Friesland district. Get there: ferry from Carolinensiel-Harlesiel, then the island train from harbour to village (4 km). That island train is Wangerooge's icon: a narrow-gauge line since 1897, now with concrete locos. In the village: the Westturm (now a youth hostel, once a sea-mark since 1597), the seafront pavilion café, the Rosengarten. 5 km of beach and the only nudist cove at the western tip. Live concerts on the beach in summer; remarkably quiet in winter.
