Wilhelmshaven

Wilhelmshaven is German naval history and the gateway to the Jade Bay. Founded in the 19th century as a Prussian fleet base on Germany's deepest natural harbour, it is today both a navy garrison and a research hub (Senckenberg, an outpost of the Alfred Wegener Institute). The Südstrand with its boardwalks and promenade feels like a spa resort within the city. Notable: the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke (Germany's largest swing bridge), the Wadden Sea Visitor Centre, the Wilhelmshaven Aquarium, and the JadeWeserPort container terminal. In summer, boat trips cross the Jade Bay to the seal banks at Mellumplate. The Halunder Jet to Helgoland leaves from the harbour in season.
